The Dungeon of Smiley (Last updated January 3, 2006)

Contents

Introduction

You are Smiley, the renowned, wealthy and strikingly handsome treasure hunter. Never content with resting on your laurels, you continually seek out new adventures (and shiny stuff). What better way to do this than to take a trip into the Dungeon of Falrax? Apparently there *is* no better way, since you already spend plenty of time there. So much, in fact, that locals have taken to calling the place 'The Dungeon of Smiley' in your honor. Not too bad, eh?

The Dungeon of Smiley is a massive series of underground passages so extensive that nobody -- including you -- has ever mapped out but the smallest part. In fact, the maze of passages is so large and complex, rumors say that nobody has ever visited the same part of the dungeon twice. This rumor seems reasonable to you, since not only are you the one that started it, but you've never returned from the dungeon without a sack full of loot in tow, even after the scores of trips you've taken over the years.

Exploring the dungeon isn't all fun and games, though. The passages are as dark as they are winding and complex, so carrying a light source is essential. In such a desolate place, an extinguished lantern is tantamount to death, even for the experienced adventurer. If the lack of lighting weren't enough, an even greater danger lurks within -- as the passageways and walls of the dungeon have deteriorated over time, giant rocks have worked their way free from their surroundings, waiting to catch the inattentive off-guard. As you'd rather not have your life extinguished so prematurely, you always enter the dungeon well-prepared. Of course, 'well-prepared' is relative. Carrying too many light sources limits the amount of phat lewt that you can haul back to the surface! Therefore, your trips into the dungeon are always accompanied by a single light source, and a tiny one at that. You also carry a pickaxe; as long as you have the strength to swing it, safety is only a hand-made tunnel away.

Your task is simple: descend into the Dungeon of Smiley, grab a bunch of treasure, and exit from the top floor before your light source goes out (preferably without being crushed to death by a giant boulder!) The deeper you descend, the better the treasure will be, but the ticking clock is your enemy. Will you find the exit before time runs out?

About The Dungeon of Smiley

The Dungeon of Smiley is a game that I've worked on off and on since the middle of 2005, and managed to make a lot of progress on after spending some of a 2-week vacation from work writing code. It's a game and it's playable, but it's not particularly exciting. Nor is it complete at the moment -- among other things, there isn't a high-score table, even though there should be.

The Dungeon of Smiley uses the Allegro graphics library, and has been built and tested on Windows and Linux. The program is licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL), and the source code is freely available (see the link below). Binaries are available for Windows, but Linux users will have to build their own.

Compiling from source

The Dungeon of Smiley doesn't have any unusual requirements (other than Allegro). The Windows version was built using Dev-C++ and includes the project file. There's a simple makefile for the Linux version -- if you have the Allegro libraries and headers installed already, unpacking the source files and running 'make' should build it.
